Dental Fillings

FILLING

Filling a tooth involves the removal of the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth. This space is subsequently filled with a material that guards against additional damage. The filling also restores the functionality and aesthetic of the tooth.

To treat a cavity your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then "fill" the area on the tooth where the decayed material once lived.

Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse (such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding).

Treating a cavity, an area of decay in a tooth, is a routine part of dental care. First, a Dentist cleans out the part of the tooth that is affected, leaving a hole or empty space. Then she will fill that space to even out the surface of the tooth so that it "feels" right in the mouth and is protected from further decay.

There are types of materials commonly used to fill in space where a cavity has been removed. If you ever need a filling, here are some types to choose from with the help of your Dentist, they are;

·        Cast Gold

·        Amalgams Silver Filling

·        Tooth Coloured Composite

·        Ceramic Fillings

·        Glass Ionomer

Benefits Of Tooth Filling

·      Fillings can last upwards of 15 Years. Cast gold fillings or porcelain fillings can prove effective for up to15 years or even longer. Today's fillings are highly resistant to corrosion. Though you will pay a bit more for a filling that lasts upwards of two decades, it will protect your tooth for an extensive period of time and provide you with an invaluable peace of mind.

·   Dental fillings made of composite resin can be ideal for those who are particular about tooth aesthetics. Composite resin fillings blend in perfectly with the rest of the teeth so one needn't be so bothered about people noticing it.

·         Fillings like the glass ionomer variety release fluoride to protect the affected tooth from further decay and damage. This type of filling is normally used in cases where the decay is beneath the gum line. It can also be used for paediatric patients.

·    Fillings can also improve tooth functionality. Tooth decay can make chewing quite painful and sometimes unbearable. Having your decayed tooth filled will lessen the pain and improve eating and chewing.
