RCT: Root canal treatment

Root canal therapy or treatment is a procedure undertaken to save a tooth that might otherwise have been removed completed.

RCT is the cleaning of the inner part of the tooth, where in normal conditions you can find the pulp: soft tissue with nerves, blood’s vessels and other cells. If the dental pulp is swollen, it could cause pressure against the canal’s walls and cause pain; little by little the dental pulp loses vitality and finally dies and causes infection. Root canal treatment resolves this inflammation because the dentist or endodontist removes the contaminated tissue from the tooth.

What you should expect

It’s normal if you feel some discomfort in the tooth, especially when you bite. This discomfort is going to disappear a few days later and you can control it with some medication. Keep in touch with your dentist and follow her instructions about the type and frequency of this medication.

A delayed restoration could make bacteria grow again inside the canals and the chances of fracture are higher. A good reconstruction leads the tooth to last longer

Finally, keep an excellent cleaning habit. The tooth can suffer decay even with the root canal treatment. It’s important to make an appointment with your dentist every six months to check that your teeth are healthy.
