All you need to know about porcelain veneers. Part II
Porcelain Veneers
These are custom made shells designed to cover the
front surface of the teeth to improve its’ appearance.
Porcelain veneers are for those with already good
teeth bite but would want to enhance, cosmetically, the appearance of their
teeth.
Porcelain veneers fix discolored teeth, bizarre shaped teeth, cracked or chipped teeth.
Porcelain veneers don’t fix functional or bite problems but are however useful, in some cases, for fixing moderate spacing problems.
It is always advised that you fix your bite first with braces if there is a dental malocclusion after which you can then undergo the porcelain veneers procedure. The gum and the bone supporting the teeth also need to be very healthy.
With porcelain veneers a certain amount of tooth
enamel is removed from the surface of the teeth to allow for the bonding of
veneers.
The procedure requires 4 to 5 dental visits which will include:
1. Consultation and examination for you to communicate expressly your desire to the dentist;
2. Taking of impressions or prints for a wax up;
3. Preparation
of teeth for veneers; temporary veneers are to be fixed as you wait for the
actual set of veneers to be fabricated
by the lab. This takes some time and it’s advised that you are patient and
relaxed during this period;
4. Final
cementation of the porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers are permanently bonded to the teeth
and last averagely for about 15 to 20 years upon which replacements will be
needed.
