All you need to know about dental braces.

 Crossbites

There are three types of crossbites:

1.     Posterior crossbite, occurring on the back teeth with the upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth.

2.     Anterior crossbite: This occurs on the front teeth. Here the top front teeth sit behind the lower teeth. Anterior crossbites can either occur with a single tooth or multiple teeth. This situation can also be termed as an underbite.

3.     Buccal crossbite: Here the top teeth sit outside the lower arch of the lower teeth. This happens very close to the cheek. A buccal crossbite is also known as scissors bite.

Crossbites don’t look good and cause people with this condition to lose confidence. In teenagers, there is a considerable loss of self esteem which can negatively affect the individual’s social growth.

Crossbites can cause teeth to chip away and cause dramatic jaw growth. Severe forms of crossbites can restrict airways leading to snoring.

As one gets older, crossbites become very difficult to fix. It is advised that persons with this condition seek early treatment.

In some moderate crossbites, expandable plates will be required. The expanders expand the upper arch to correct the crossbite.

In this animation we demonstrate how mild crossbites are fixed with metal braces and elastics to unlock the patients natural bite.
